Revolutionizing Workspaces: The Future of Eco-Friendly Office Design
Studio V | Belmont University | 2025
This project reimagines the modern office environment through the lens of sustainability, biophilic design, and material innovation. Situated in the Hearst Tower in New York City, the design focuses on creating healthier, more productive spaces that minimize environmental impact while reconnecting users with nature.
Rooted in a deep understanding of the environmental and human health crises driven by current building practices, this project addresses key concerns including carbon emissions, sick building syndrome, and the psychological effects of urban life. Drawing on research in biophilia, attention restoration theory, and material ecology, the design emphasizes multisensory engagement and the use of biofabricated and locally sourced materials.
The proposal integrates natural elements such as reclaimed wood, mycelium-based components, and air-purifying biopolymers to enhance well-being and reduce environmental strain. The diagrid structure of the Hearst Tower guides the spatial organization, resulting in a layout that supports flexibility, collaboration, and connection to nature.
By embedding sustainability at every level, from energy performance and material sourcing to mental health and inclusivity, the design presents a holistic approach to the future of urban workplaces. It serves as a model for how office environments can inspire wellness, foster creativity, and actively contribute to reversing climate change.
