Inclusive Furniture: Bench Design
Studio II: Inclusivity | Belmont University | July 14, 2024
Designer: Caroline West
This project explores the principles of inclusive design through the creation of a universally accessible bench intended for public use. The design process prioritized human-centered thinking, aiming to create a seating solution that is welcoming, flexible, and supportive of people with diverse abilities, identities, and needs.
Rooted in the belief that inclusive design is simply good design, this project emphasizes equity, choice, and comfort. Key considerations included ergonomic accessibility, visual and tactile cues, and adaptability for various body types and mobility levels. The bench's form and materiality were carefully selected to offer a sense of ease, belonging, and dignity to all users.
This piece serves as both functional furniture and a statement of design ethics—placing people at the heart of the creative process, acknowledging difference, and striving for environments that are not only accessible but genuinely inclusive.
ADA Compliant Ramp
Studio II: Inclusivity | July 2024
This project focused on designing an ADA-compliant ramp to ensure accessible and inclusive design in public spaces. The design adheres to ADA guidelines for slope, landing dimensions, handrail specifications, and clear floor space, prioritizing both functionality and user comfort. Through technical drawings and thoughtful detailing, the project demonstrates a commitment to equity in the built environment.
Inclusive Locker Room Design
Studio II: Inclusivity | August 2024
This project was developed in response to the growing need for equitable and accessible facilities in public and recreational environments. The Inclusive Locker Room Design aims to create a safe, comfortable, and welcoming space for users of all gender identities, abilities, and personal needs.
The design includes clearly defined zones for men, women, and community use, with features such as private changing rooms, accessible bathrooms and showers, urinals, and combination changing/shower stalls. A thoughtful layout promotes both privacy and visibility, ensuring users can navigate the space with confidence and ease. The inclusion of a lactation room and gender-neutral restrooms reflects a commitment to supporting a full spectrum of users, including families, parents, and nonbinary individuals.
Through careful consideration of spatial relationships, circulation, and inclusive programming, the project embodies universal design principles and demonstrates how thoughtful planning can foster dignity, comfort, and accessibility in communal spaces.
