Teen Sustainability Museum
Studio I | Belmont University | Spring 2024
Designer: Caroline West
This project reimagines a local historic factory as a vibrant, interactive sustainability museum designed specifically for teens. With a mission to inspire the next generation of changemakers, the space integrates education, environmental awareness, and community engagement through immersive exhibits and adaptable programming.
Located in the Franklin Factory, the design celebrates the site's industrial character by preserving its original materials—exposed brick, wood, and steel—while incorporating eco-conscious innovations such as mycelium acoustic panels, recycled plastic installations, and furniture made from upcycled materials like concrete “rock” benches modeled after global geological features.
The museum is designed for ages 13–18, with flexible zones that support learning, relaxation, and creativity. Interactive displays allow teens to explore sustainability topics, from biophilic design to waste reduction. Outdoor spaces, including a green roof-inspired grass area, extend the museum’s reach beyond its walls and promote experiential learning.
Key features include:
ADA-accessible entries and gender-neutral restrooms
A greenhouse garden and outdoor gathering area
A retreat room with acoustic treatments for sensory-sensitive guests
Multi-use exhibit zones and a flexible event space
Lighting strategies that support plant growth and minimize environmental impact
The project is grounded in sustainable design principles including low-impact materials, waste reduction, flexibility, and health-conscious choices. Through thoughtful programming, material selection, and spatial planning, the museum provides teens with both a welcoming space and the tools to envision a more sustainable future.
